The Grange Insurance Audubon Center is celebrating the contributions of an outgoing AmeriCorps member while welcoming a new one. According to the center, these service members gain hands-on experience in conservation while helping to educate the public and restore habitats.

Cierra Clark recently concluded her service term at the Ohio-based center. During her year, she helped educate more than 500 students. She also connected with environmental organizations, improved landscapes through native plantings and invasive species removal, and engaged hundreds of adults through art, music, and nature programs.

From Novice to Engaged Conservationist

Cierra's own connection to birds and conservation grew significantly. She started with minimal bird knowledge but, through her work, encountered species she did not know existed. One of her most memorable experiences involved participating in spring migration monitoring with the Lights Out Columbus initiative.

I even braved the early mornings downtown to search for bird strikes and rescue any injured birds during the spring migration season with Lights Out Columbus, Cierra shared. The experience also helped her develop confidence, leadership skills, and experience in engaging diverse audiences.

Welcoming a New Member

As Cierra's journey concludes, the center welcomes incoming AmeriCorps member Hattie Benedetti. A Columbus native, Benedetti is eager to contribute to conservation and environmental education efforts in her hometown. She looks forward to sharing Audubon's mission with visitors and inspiring connections with nature.

In her free time, Hattie enjoys birdwatching, nature walks, photography, and crafting. The center stated it is fortunate to have her passions joining the team.

The Role of Service Programs

The Audubon Center states that programs like AmeriCorps are vital for developing future environmental leaders. By providing hands-on experience and professional development, they help build a stronger and more inclusive conservation movement. At the Grange Insurance Audubon Center, members become part of a network of individuals working toward a future where people and birds thrive together.

The center expressed pride in Cierra's accomplishments and looks forward to the impact Hattie will make. Cierra said she is thankful for the experience and plans to take her gained skills and knowledge on to her next adventure to continue making a positive impact.
