Heavy Rains Trigger Mudslides and Evacuations in Northern Chile
Intense rainfall in Chile has caused mudslides, landslides, and evacuations in northern regions, leaving at least one person dead and disrupting infrastructure. Authorities have responded by closing roads, suspending classes, and relocating patients from affected health facilities.

Heavy rains in Chile have unleashed a series of mudslides and landslides, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate in northern regions. The disaster has claimed at least one life, according to officials.
## Evacuations and Infrastructure Disruptions
The National System for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred) ordered evacuations in multiple communities due to rising river levels and the threat of further mudslides carrying debris. In Tocopilla, part of the Antofagasta region, residents shared images of a mudslide sweeping away vehicles and sediment, with mud flooding narrow streets.
By Tuesday evening, Senapred reported that **343 people** were sheltering in evacuation centers, primarily in Antofagasta. Authorities also confirmed one fatality in a traffic accident linked to the weather conditions.
The downpours have led to road closures, water and electricity outages, and the isolation of some communities. Near the Bolivian border, the Chungará border complex was shut down due to snowfall, leaving around **300 people** stranded on **10 buses**.
Public services have also been affected. The Ministry of Education suspended classes in at least three regions, while five healthcare facilities were forced to close, with patients transferred to other centers.
## Weather Forecast and Climate Preparedness
The Meteorological Directorate of Chile predicts that rain, snow, strong winds, and possible thunderstorms will persist until at least Friday. The instability is caused by a cold upper-level low-pressure system.
Chile has strengthened its climate emergency monitoring and response measures this year in anticipation of **El Niño**, which could have lasting effects until March 2027.
