Mercury contamination in Peruvian Amazon insects linked to gold mining, study finds
A new study in Nature reveals how mercury from gold mining accumulates in insects across the Peruvian Amazon, with contamination levels varying by diet and proximity to mining. Insects in heavily mined areas like La Pampa showed up to 7 times higher mercury levels than those in protected zones, while necrophagous species had up to 39 times more mercury than herbivores.
