Sloth Bears Help Shape India's Dry Forests as Unlikely Seed Dispersers
A recent study reveals that sloth bears play a crucial role in structuring India's dry deciduous forests by dispersing viable seeds and influencing plant regeneration.

Sloth bears have been found to play a vital role in shaping India's dry deciduous forests, with their presence and dietary habits influencing the composition of plant species in these ecosystems.
The study, conducted in the mountainous south-central Aravalli range in the western state of Rajasthan, analyzed 180 droppings or scats of sloth bears (*Melursus ursinus*) and discovered that the bears' diet shifted from plant-dominated in the winter to animal-dominated in the summer.

The researchers found that the bears' diet in winter consisted mainly of ants, while termites dominated their diet in the summer. Donkey berry (*Grewia flavescens*) was a critical food source for the bears in both seasons, while *Ziziphus nummularia* was favored in winter and the golden shower tree (*Cassia fistula*) in summer.
The study's co-author, Utkarsh Prajapati, a senior project associate at the Wildlife Institute of India, noted that the strong shift in diet was a surprise, as previous studies on sloth bears in semi-arid regions had shown that they consume a lot of fruits during the summer.
However, the bears' dietary habits are highly adaptable, and they switch to foods that are more available. This adaptability is crucial for their survival in harsh environments.
To test whether bears help in seed dispersal, the researchers monitored the germination of eight plant species most important in the bears' diet. They planted 50 seeds of each species - 25 removed from scats and 25 collected directly from fruits - and found that seeds of six species remained highly viable after passing through the bears' digestive tracts.

The researchers found that seeds obtained from scats germinated faster in some instances. For example, *Ziziphus nummularia* seeds from bear droppings germinated in just 50 days, compared to 100 days for seeds collected directly from tree fruits.
However, the study also found that the bears may act as vectors for invasive flora. Seeds of *Lantana camara*, one of India's most aggressive invasive shrubs, collected from bear droppings germinated, while none collected directly from fruits did.
The study's co-author, K.S. Gopi Sundar, an independent scientist, noted that the findings highlight the overlooked ecological contributions of omnivores like sloth bears. Their adaptability and ability to survive in harsh environments make them crucial for the structure and regeneration of dry deciduous forests.
While conservation efforts in India typically focus on predators and large herbivores, the study shows the importance of considering the role of omnivores in shaping ecosystems.
